چکیده

This paper examines an evolutionary model in which the primary source of ``noise'' that moves the model between equilibria is not arbitrarily improbable mutations but mistakes in learning. We model strategy selection as a birth death process, allowing us to find a simple, closed-form solution for the stationary distribution. We examine equilibrium selection by considering the limiting case as the population gets large, eliminating aggregate noise. Conditions are established under which the risk-dominant equilibrium in a 2_2 game is selected by the model as well as conditions under which the payoff-dominant equilibrium is selected. Muddling Through: Noisy Equilibrium Selection1

This paper examines an evolutionary model in which the primary source of \noise" that moves the model between equilibria is not arbitrarily improbable mutations but mistakes in learning. We model strategy selection as a birth-death process, allowing us to ̄nd a simple, closed-form solution for the stationary distribution of the model even though we take the noise to be bounded away from zero. W...

Equilibrium Selection through Incomplete Information in Coordination Games: An Experimental Study

We experiment on a coordination game with uncertainty about payoffs. This game is closely related to models used in macroeconomic and financial applications to solve equilibrium indeterminacy. Subjects receive noisy signals about the true payoffs. The unique equilibrium is reached by iterative deletion of strictly dominated strategies. Over time actual behavior converges to the equilibrium. The ...

Noisy signaling: Theory and experiment

We investigate a noisy signaling game, in which nature adds random noise to the (costly) message chosen. Theoretically, with an unfavorable prior the separating equilibrium vanishes for low noise. It reappears for intermediate levels of noise, where messages increase with noise. A pooling equilibrium always exists. In our experiment, noise works as an empirical equilibrium selection device. Whe...

Organ donation and the ethics of muddling through

Organ donation offers opportunities for people in critical care units to help save the lives of other patients. It is not always easy, however, to handle the transition from treating a patient to preserving a potential donor, and organ donation consistently provokes ethical questions in critical care units. What do we expect ethics to deliver? In light of a recent ethics conference in Denmark, ...

Decisionmaking in practice: The dynamics of muddling through.

An alternative to conventional models that treat decisions as open-loop independent choices is presented. The alterative model is based on observations of work situations such as healthcare, where decisionmaking is more typically a closed-loop, dynamic, problem-solving process. The article suggests five important distinctions between the processes assumed by conventional models and the reality ...
